Holy hell! What were the filmmakers thinking?

Was this movie's idea of a tense, dramatic scene really just watching a bunch of other people watching an anatomy lecture? Did it really think, "the other guys said you pushed a gurney with a corpse on it" was a suitable basis for the crisis in a young couple's relationship? Did it really believe a scene showing two overweight people dancing would be uproariously funny? The whole scene just reminded me of those assholes you'll sometimes see criticizing people with imperfect bodies for spoiling the aesthetic of a gym.

This clumsy abortion of a movie had no plot, and it boggles my mind to think that somebody actually wrote an entire script for it, somebody put earnest effort into directing it, somebody probably held auditions, and so on. I can understand a lot of bad movies as passion projects in which ambition outweighs talent by several orders of magnitude, but I can't locate a central idea in this movie that might have motivated a person to see it through to fruition. You don't need an hour's worth of film in order to point and laugh at fat people or let a bunch of 40 year-olds pretend that they're in college again.

Great host segments on this episode. Love "The Old School", and Mr. Hoover's autopsy.

Wow, were people ever that afraid of corpses? I thought that people from the older generations were made of tougher stuff. At least we had a Phantom Creeps at the end, I love Bela Lugosi!!!!!

It took me way too long to realize that the title isn't referring to some metaphorical ring. Not a cult or a cell dedicated to abstract terror. The actual physical ring on the dead guy's hand terrifies Lewis. It's a literal ring of terror. Which says a lot about this movie. You expect some depth or meaning coming into it, but, no, any search for subtlety is vastly overthinking things.

In the car: You know, honey, it seems like you're not afraid of anything, and that's kind of creepy.

In the sorority: It seems like he's not afraid of anything. Isn't that creepy?

Okay, honey. What's wrong? Why won't you talk to me?
Well, if you must know, people are saying that you're not afraid of anything, and that it's really creepy.
So? Who cares what people say? You have to think for yourself. What do you think?
Oh, well, I don't know. What would you do if the situation was reversed?
I'd ask you if it's true.

... Okay, so... Huh? What's so creepy about not being afraid? And why does she suddenly give him the cold shoulder over it? He never actually addresses the question. And when he tells her to think for herself, she asks him what to think. And he's telling her not to let other people put ideas into her head, but she was spooked by his fearlessness already.

Nothing about this makes any sense, and the more you think about it, the worse it gets.

It's too bad that it never ended up meaning anything because Louis' little speech to Betty about not caring about what 'they' think was actually a nice one. It could have really been important, but it was, unfortunately, given in the context of a bunch of med students humiliating themselves in order to join a fraternity.

It's sad to see that Wyllis Cooper wrote the story for The Phantom Creeps. Notwithstanding this crapola, Cooper was perhaps the single most talented American author of speculative radio dramas. He created Lights Out and wrote all of the roughly 100 episodes of Quiet, Please, some of which are absolute gems. "The Thing on the Fourbile Board" is on every old time radio aficionado's list of scariest audio plays. He also wrote the screenplay for Son of Frankenstein, which I know some people consider to be the best in the series.

He was in his 40s when he appeared in Ring of Terror (his only starring role so far as I could tell), but he was a production supervisor in Star Wars IV: A New Hope. He was over the miniature and optical effects unit.

This is another one that is available for free streaming on ShoutFactoryTV. The quality is way better than any of the YouTube versions. So, even though you can't see a YT version, you can still watch it. (Although I'm guessing there will be regional restrictions on it, since there usually are.)

Beyond the fact that I think that fraternities, in general, are a waste of time, these initiations given to the various freshman are far from equal. One guy has to go without water, one has to ask people for pennies, one has to find the lovers out in the woods. ...and then, Louis Moffet has to go, break into a mausoleum and rob a corpse?? That's far from the same level of effort as the others.

Was that it? The story was just getting started! It feels like they ran out of money a third of the way through making a movie and decided to release it anyway.

I hate to be the one to bring this up, but what the hell is with the autopsy scene? Were people really such pantywaists about seeing a corpse 60 years ago? I might be passing out during that lecture too, but unlike Fatty, It'd be from boredom.

If there's one riff that makes this filme anything other than an exercise in tedium it has to be Crow's narration of the rush to autopsy.

And something I just noticed: the professor had to give the students the address to "the city morgue" when such a big deal was made about them being so eager that they were virtually camped outside?

First time I've seen that 'escape hatch' that Joel jumps into responding to movie sign. Quite ingenious for a plywood set. (And movie "sign" is a great word for the putrid playlist the Mad's have. When you're tracking prey, sign is another word for poop.)

Frank starts the invention exchange by inhaling gas and says, "Mommy! Mommy! Don't look at me! Don't EVER look at me!" Those lines are from Blue Velvet starring Dennis Hopper. A VERY, VERY disturbed and disturbing movie...even more disturbed than the Mads!!! (Did I say disturbing? You've been warned.)

Wow, it really cracks me up when they have older folks playing teens!!!! I really wonder y they tended 2 do that during this time period!? The "kids" of DaddyO was bad, but boy....so far this one takes the cake with a true cast of AARP'ers! One of these days I'll research why they didn't get age appropriate (or at least ones who looked it) actors! Oh and, the Old School bit was HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love how they make an aside about re-using jokes for different episodes when Crow says, "Rattle, rattle, thunder, clatter. Boom, boom, boom," and Servo replies, "Oh no, that's me." Cause, you see, Servo's the one who always says that so it's... funny how... ehhh.
