So the movie starts off with a (presumably Russian) stealth bomber carrying a nuclear payload across the Arctic towards the US mainland, ready to set off WWIII.

The movie ends with the successful launch of "Z Plan." Z Plan consists of a gigantic rocket, big enough to fit a 200+ foot monster in the nose cone, a rocket engine which must be nearly half a mile high with gantry all buried in a subterranean facility, the necessary motors to lift that all up for launch, with a retractable pad over it sporting gigantic flamethrowers. All of which has to have been purpose-built for Gamera. (All under the assumption that every other measure would fail.)

Which means that the governments of the world came together, agreed on a design team, approved the design, agreed on who would provide what parts and resources, dug a hole half a mile deep, built a platform to raise and lower the entire assembly, constructed an electrified dome larger than most buildings, constructed a rocket engine roughly the size of the largest skyscaper on Earth today, and assembled it all. Not to mention the transportation infrastructure to get all the parts and materials there. And everything you need to feed and house the workers. And they did all this on a remote island, so it all had to be shipped there...

Look up what it took just to pour the concrete frame of the Hoover Dam. With them pouring new layers even as the lower ones set, working continuous shifts 24/7, 364 days a year, it took two years. And the construction of onsite factories just to make the enormous metal buckets to carry and pour it. And special train lines to bring the materials over. And an entire city for the workers. And that's just for the concrete shell. And pouring a concrete shell around the hole containing the rocket and gantry would be an even bigger project.

In... how much time? They say at the coal plant that they need to hold Gamera there for 24 hours to give the team time to build Z Plan. Even if that's just finishing construction... Is there any indication whatsoever that it's more than a couple of weeks from the beginning of the movie to the end?

There is a fossil turtle of the genus Gamera, named for the eponymous kaiju of this film. The real Gamera has wing-like extensions of its shell, and reminded the author of a flying turtle, hence the name. He also named Ninjemys.

I'm not a big fan of the invention exchange, but the bird cage cleaner probably my favorite invention. It really seems like something I could use to clean my rodents' cages, and... Hammy the Hamster? Hammy? No! No no no! Not another one!

You gotta love it. The Japanese are blaming the US for exploding a nuclear weapon in due course of a war they started, how lame can you go? It's our fault we were attacked at Pearl Harbor so, of course, we send Gamera to destroy their tiny island.

Gamera wakes up and immediately kills an entire boatload of unarmed researchers. Gamera flies off and destroys a dam. Gamera levels half of Tokyo. Gamera rips open a building and incinerates everyone inside.

Kenny watches the city burn as the monster kills people by the thousand. "Gamera is good! Gamera would never hurt me! Gamera is friend to all children everywhere!"

Kenny is very special, isn't he?

My favorite thing about this episode is how they use actual enunciation exercises like "toy boat, toy boat" and "unique New York, unique New York" as an entire series of riffs. Brilliant.

I am very glad that this turtle made his appearance! The drunk US Air Force officer made me lose it. So awful. In fact all actors in those scenes were just... awful.

Gamera is friend to children? How about the thousands of children who lived in Tokyo when he destroyed it? I agree with the bots, Gamera is a hell beast and Kenny is his demon-child master.

That american general at the beginning has got to be the best part of the movie. "Have you spotted anything on your radar screen?" "No, sir, they must be coated in, anti-, electric wavepaint, sir." "Operator hand me the mic. Calling all planes, fighter planes, based in the Arctic ocean... this is your commander calling, over." "This is the strategic fighter, over!"

I had a pet turtle in high school I nicknamed Gamera. (Actual name was Kale.) This was before I had discovered MST3k. Something about sweaty Japanese men in rubber suits has always appealed to me...
I immediately regret typing that.

I like the way Crow shows us a mean streak that's unusual this early in the series. Usually it's Servo who's giving Crow a hard time; in this episode, Crow totally turns the tables, tormenting Servo, taunting and mocking him with nasty riffs about Tibby being stepped on, Tibby's burial mound, screwing up Servo's touching ballad to Tibby. Awesome!

What were they going to use Z plan for if Gamera hadn't been?

Okay, what's the relationship of the woman to Kenny and his father? I think the dubbing has him saying "sister" at some point, but she's the one who talks to Kenny's teacher and she says that "his mother died" not "our mother". So what I'm wondering is if she's supposed to be a stepmother or something.

An all-around great episode! The riffs are tight and consistently hilarious, the host segments are wonderful ("Tibby's Song" and Mike as a super cute Gamera). It' just a fun, fun episode. I usually have to watch YouTube in 240 (which is pathetic, I know, but my computer's nearly ten years old) and I'm so grateful that Netflix still has this one on the streaming service.
