Wow. What was the message in that short? I honestly don't know what they were going for there. Safety, I guess, but geez, the main thing I took away from the short was a deep loathing for Union Pacific for even making such a film. Whatever. Luckily Mikey made up for it!!

I loved the safety short: Charlie was utterly ecstatic about the birth of their first child, but didn't put up much of a fight when the doctor said he didn't need to be there for THE BIRTH.

Such a tour de force, why so few laughs? Is it the depressing nature of the short? The claustrophobic and bleak setting of the feature? Looking at some of the comments, I see I'm not the first to wonder at this. A sleeper keeper.

Wow, what was the point of that short? Why remind us that none of it matters? The work we do, the things we say, write, build, it doesn't matter. We spend our lives fighting each other; working for someone else's agenda; being treated as a commodity, only useful as far as you can make someone else money; kept under control through debt, fear, and if all else fails, through force; and none of it matters. We are just a growth on a rock in space, probably one of many. We are given such a wonderful, brief time of life. A short flash of light in eternal darkness, and what do we do with it? What have we ALWAYS done with it? We SQUANDER IT!!! We fritter it away in vain pursuits of material wealth, we hurt others in many ways to get what WE want. We succumb to fear and let others rule us. We have the mental capacity to recognize these faults in ourselves and fix them, but do we? Sure many people do, but largely, no we don't. We are worse than any virus or insect that mindlessly lays waste to it's environment. No. We do what we do knowingly, and that is a whole new breed of evil. The worst part for me personally? I'm just as f***ing guilty as everyone else is, and it hurts me more deeply than I know how to express.

There's a pretty clever camera shift at about 50:00. After he knocks out Julian, Faust rips up a sheet or something and then, he throws it right at the camera and there's a blackout, coming back with him just finishing tying Julian up. I actually found it to be very interesting.

Edgar G. Ulmar directed this? No wonder this is one of the MST3K movies I actually sort of like. He did a lot of fairly good (albeit weird) film noir movies in the late 40s, such as "Detour."

So I'm taking a tour of the eps I've never managed to finish. I've seen the ghoulish delight of a short many times, and all the skits. (Frank's anguished "Squanto! brings back fond memories.)

But the movie. I doubt I'll watch it again, but I'm glad I finished it.

I find it funny that in the last 30 seconds the movie decides it wants us to take it seriously. What would I do? Turn off this profoundly dumb, boring movie, which I did half an hour ago. (Well, previously, I did. This trip, I obviously made it to the end. Still...

You know, another movie on my unfinished list is The Unearthly, which also involves an escaped convict held by an evil conniver. I guess that plot line just doesn't work for me.

"You people bring matches for Mikey?" One of my favorite lines from any of the host segments. The way Mike just stares straight-faced at the camera before the delivery, and Tom's reaction to the line, that's icing on the cake. This episode deserves more laughs than 54 just for that skit alone.

Mike maintains that incredibly unsettling "thosand-yard stare" throughout the opening skit. It must have been quite a challenge given that everyone else on set was assuredly laughing like maniacs.

Makes you wonder how many takes this bit required.
