So I was all set to go on a big rant about how Trace's Crow would have riffed the jimmy kimono at 1:17:07, then had to delete it when Bill called out the full body condoms shortly after.

Still, the effects were pretty decent, considering the time period. Definitely better than the grasshoppers crawling up the postcard of a city in "The Beginning of the End." Although, I did miss Peter Graves.

I thought the mantis looked like a pretty well done monster. At least they didn't get a case of "disposable" praying mantises to film.

MY GOD! It makes sense. They stated that this is an "Unusual Flying Object." Maybe, just maybe, the myth of the UFO is REAL... and it isn't aliens investigating our planet, but ANCIENT INSECTS WHICH WERE FROZEN BUT HAVE THAWED OUT!!! But will the Armed Forces talk about this? NO! Deny Deny Deny! IT'S A CONSPIRACY, I TELL YOU!

I think these writers knew nothing about biology. Not only because the very idea of a giant insect is ludicrous, but because the characters keep misidentifying basic animals (and yes, despite what they said, the term 'animals' includes insects). First, there the museum writer who calls a giant squid a jellyfish, and then there is the actual biologist (the guy the freaking Pentagon called in to identify an creature) calling a beetle an ant.

Guess I'm just biased, but this is definitely my favorite movie they've done so far. Not only do I love the movie, but the riffs were beautifully executed. Especially whenever the old professor was on the screen.

While they're all great at delivering the riffs, Tom Servo seems to be the best at nailing them at the perfect moment every time. His delivery of "I peed your pants. I'm not sure how." was utterly superb and earns my award for best riff this episode.

Back before VCRs and Laserdiscs all we had was Super 8. For my 7th birthday, my mother gave me my dad's Super 8 projector and his collection of films he had left behind. There were 5 of them in big boxes with 4 reels each. This was one of them and I remember it was the first one I watched since I was a humongous creature feature geek already and still am today. While it may be hard to watch now, I ate it up back then and it has a place in my heart just for that. :)

I was hoping "You know how mountain farmers are afraid of thunder?" would be the stinger. Definitely the most WTF line from this movie, followed closely by horse flies being able to travel faster than sound.

Man, tough week for Dr. Ned Jackson! There he was cruising along all fat and sassy as chief paleontologist in D.C. and seemingly just about to close the deal with sexy magazine chick Marge, when a deadly Mantis shows up followed by a smooth talking Air Force Colonel. Next thing you know he’s just a tag along third wheel asked to hold the camera! Damn bugs!

This riff was just too long to put up at the top of the site, but still wanted to share it. Gets me every time!

"Oh, we're going to Nova Scotia! Good, some herring would be nice and... oh, no, no, no. We're going to the British Isles, great, to taste some Guiness and -- I guess it's Morocco, for some beautiful rugs, and -- uh, the Ivory Coast, then, for its lovely ivory and... I guess we're going to the... The South Sandwich Islands! I've got some family there and -- ah, forget it."

This might belong as a favorite riff, but the comment at 45:45 "Clay Shaw throws another party" knocked me off the chair! There are so many layers of depth as to WHY that line is a classic. Long live Kevin Bacon!

That holy bomb scene is a total ripoff of -- or homage to, depending on how you look at it -- Monty Python & the Holy Grail's holy hand grenade bit. Here's a link to the scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOrgLj9lOwk.

I can't get past the mantis not only moving around in the arctic, but the fact that it survived being frozen. I guess the writers didn't wanna get bogged down in the range of survivable temperatures for insects...

I agree with gal dagon. I wanted the Mantis to swallow them up when they were taking pictures. All the humans were stupid and boring in this movie. The deadly Mantis was the real hero/star. Oh, and of course Mike & the Bots were exceptional in this(I agree) underrated episode!!

I have two things to say about this episode:

1. Pearl reminds me so much of River Song in this episode, with the hair and the gun.

2. That whole "every known species of animal has a bony skeleton" bit at 30:50. I'm no biologist, but doesn't he completely contradict himself in the next few sentences by giving examples of animals that DON'T have a bony skeleton?
