In Mike's introduction to this episode on the DVD he tells how the cast and producers were really excited when they learned that MST was going to feature their movie (especially pink boy). They even had a viewing party when the episode aired. They were none to happy to see how Mike and the Bots savaged their little film. You have to wonder what they thought was going to happen.

This past summer I took a road trip up to Vermont to catch up with the old “Time Chasers” gang. Here are my observations:

GEN-CORP TECHNOLOGY was purchased sight unseen by IBM during the tech boom acquisition frenzy at the height of the go-go 90’s. When an IBM company representative showed up and found that the whole thing only consisted of a few guys hanging out in their “office” at a branch library and riding around in one of their uncle’s limo rentals, the Gen-Corp domain name was quietly listed for sale.

J.K. ROBERTSON had his white-collar malfeasance finally catch up to him. He served a 4 year term in Federal prison. He did not waste his time though. There he became a certified hairstylist and opened his own shop in town. I dropped in, and while he is still an unsavory unapologetic creep, the man does give a great haircut! I have to give him that.

MATTHEW PAUL did not take his firing well. He held several menial jobs including that of Greeter in the small local grocery store. “Hey, I’ve got this great wardrobe, why let it go to waste?” he often told customers. Later he leased a storefront and opened a consignment shop that offered “Upscale attire for the professional gentleman.” Pathetically, I was told the entire stock was just a few diminutive sized well worn pastel colored suits. His first rent check bounced and as of this writing his whereabouts are unknown.

LISA decided to run the phony 75 year old skydiving granny story anyway. Discredited and terminated, she did not end up with Nick though. She was often overheard at the town’s tavern, blowsy drunk, saying, “I’m not going to spend the rest of my life with a man who still uses a F@#&-ing floppy disk drive!” She and airport slacker Marty now have three kids in a two bedroom trailer and she dances at a strip club called Tangents (aka Time Chasers). She works the dayshift if you want to stop in and buy her a drink, please.

NICK is still rocking the same old mullet and riding the same old 10 speed. In between residences, he is crashing on a friends couch. He borrowed twenty bucks from me and assured me he is still doing, “Very important and necessary work at Castleton State College.” On my way out of town I drove past the Castleton campus. I looked over and saw Nick mowing their lawn. He stopped the mower and waved at me with that goofy smile. I pretended I did not see him, floored it, flew out of town, and did not look back until I got all the way to Burlington; I just didn’t have heart.

When Crow visits Crow in the lunch room, and says "I think I know a little more about your future than you do" he's quoting a line from Heinlein's classic time-travel-paradox short story, "By His Bootstraps" uttered by the character from the future visiting himself in the past.

If all he needed was money for his project, and he's smart enough to build a time machine from an airplane, why didn't he at least hire a lawyer to write his contract? Better yet, go back in time, invest $100 like the short guy suggested, and let the interest accumulate.

so they contemplate what they would do with a time machine and killing hitler never comes up? That is time machine 101! The first thing you do upon obtaining a time machine is killing hitler or saving john conner. Whichever comes first in the non-linear time continuum. My guess is they're closeted nazi sympathizers. Only explanation for not wanting to kill hitler right off the bat.

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with Matthew Bruch (Nick Miller). From what I could find, he didn't have a stunt man, and he was doing quite a bit in this movie. Riding horses, bikes, climbing around in trees, running all over the place, and even if he wasn't actually on the wing of a plane in the air, it does look like the plane was moving a little bit while he's doing the fight with JK. And he manages to be fairly competent as an actor, too. All in all, not bad.

Nick is the worst... JP tells him to get on the problem and try to figure out what went wrong and he says "NO THERE'S NOTHING TO WORK ON." Things are bad in 50 years and he can't figure out an angle to work with a time machine at his disposal? The 'evil guy' is being completely reasonable and even accommodating... not to mention all Nick had to do was play ball and he'd retain access to his machine that could easily undo everything he changed.

The whole time travel thing is confusing. The Crows... Crow 1 and Crow 2. If Crow 2 goes back in time to warn Crow 1 to NOT warn Mike, I can understand that. But when Crow 1 gets the job at the cheese factory.... that means he never went back to the SOL, which means he never met Eddie, which means he would not have found out about Mike's death on stage, which means he would never have gone back to warn himself to not tell Mike. So, with him keeping the job, there should only be Eddie and Tom on the ship. I'M SO CONFUSED!!!!!!!

Of course, the fact that it is only a TV show makes me getting past the whole confusion thing much easier, but still....

One of my favorite episodes... however, here's my problem with it. Castleton Weenie is our hero, right? And Bob Evil is our big-bad? So Middle-management Michael Medved is just kinda a crony of Bob Evil. BUT, he's not really even bad. He doesn't chase them in the Libray/Multinational Global Headquarters, doesn't shoot in the plane, refuses to shoot in the past, and gets killed by big-bad because he's "not evil enough." With me?

So, what happens? Castleton Weenie alters the past so that Bob Evil doesn't learn about the time plane... by totally screwing over Michael Medveal Middle-management. Who was only doing his job! In the "true" timeline, the world doesn't' apocalypse, Bob Evil gets to go be evil somewhere else, and Castleton Weenie gets Fashion Disaster Girl. Michael Med-dead is the only one who gets screwed.

/yes, yes, in the words of Leonard Da Vinci, "hey, what do you want? It's a BAD MOVIE."

Do you think it makes a difference that Mike would have died in the alternative timeline (causing Eddie to come to the SOL)? Though Eddie made Servo a subservient half-bot and Crow certainly despised him, what if Mike became a famous LIVING rock star? Would that make it wrong for Crow to go back and speak with his jerk self of 1/2 hour earlier to convince him NOT to change time? It certainly would become much more of an ethical dilemma for Crow. Can robots make ethical decisions? This experiment raises so many questions (and yes I know it's just a show...)

So we spent a good amount of the remaining budget some bar. At one point, I couldn't figure out why so many young people were running around in tuxedos. Turns out it was prom night. We almost got locked out of the studio. No one could find the keys. Anyway, I remember seeing the poster for this movie in the lobby and had never watched it until now. Guess I didn't miss much.

The 50's & 60's flicks MST3K lampoons simply didn't have special effects available yet. This one has no excuse. These guys chose to make a bad movie. They did it to us on purpose!

This episode feels experimental, a little uneven; the beginning and ending host segments are sweet, but the middle third goes to some dark places. The movie (original title: "Tangents") was David Giancola's first; he went on to make an embarrassment of cheap DTV flicks and milk his status as "director of Anna Nicole Smith's last movie" for all it was worth.

Our hero is repugnant. Thanks, Time Chasers!
