Fueled by too much of the Kind (and a butt-load of burgers from In & Out), here it is, my Mstie story:

A year ago to the day, I discovered that Netflix (and then later, Amazon) had several episodes of Mystery Science Theater - something that I only decided to watch because: 1. I was desperately, achingly, face-in-the-floor depressed, having been laid off from my job a year earlier and still without work; 2. I had, at the time, literally felt like there was nothing interesting on anything anywhere; and 3. I had remembered seeing two or three episodes in years past and found them hilarious.

Let's go back a bit... *cue flashback*

Hobgoblins was the first episode I ever saw. I was probably 16 (this was 2001-ish - and shut up, I'm gonna be thirty, so there... *stomps out of room*) I remember the night I saw it pretty well, actually. I was hanging out with my friend Mike (HA!), it was probably around 2 am, and I guarantee we were hopped up on sour patch kids and Dr. Pepper. To this day, Mike and I will say lines from the episode ("Why did Hoover lose?") when riffing real life. To be honest, MST3k humor has always been my kind of humor. Mike and I spent most of High School riffing on real life. I just never realized there were 170+ episodes of hilarity that I was missing out on...

Manos was the next and only other episode that I can remember seeing thereafter. In the summer of 2002 I had the opportunity to go the New York Film Academy (that's a WHOLE OTHER story in-and-of-itself) and, being around film people, the conversation of the "worst movie ever made" came up and Manos was mentioned. Now that I think about it, the first time I saw Manos was un-riffed - and I remember how painful it was to sit in that tiny theater several of us rented out on the lot and watch that abomination... You'll imagine my surprise when one night - not long after seeing the un-riffed version - I happened upon the MST3k episode on Comedy Central one late night.

So (*fast forward*) once I exhausted the episodes on Netflix/Amazon, I scoured the net – looking for Hobgoblins because “how the hell is it not streaming on either site?” and lo and behold, I found this site. It was like Christmas and I was seven and there were Legos everywhere. I remember laughing hysterically at the forum topics, just anticipating the hilarity in the episodes I hadn’t yet watched.

Anyway, long story… long… (you want to go FASTER?) I decided to watch every episode at random; and literally a year to the day, I’m ending it. Granted, I’ve been holding out on watching the last episode on the list for a couple of weeks now, and it’s: Diabolik. Yes, I saved the last episode for last. It just seemed fitting. I also decided to accompany it with the Venezuela short, to make my final foray into unknown Mstie territory a memorable one.

So join me, won’t you? I know it’s late on a Sunday, but it’d be great to know if others were (kinda) watching it with me… So, I’m needy! Sue me.

And I’d like to close with this:

Thank you Joel, Mike, Mary, Trace, Josh, Jim, Kevin, Frank, Bill, and Patrick (and if I’ve missed anyone, forgive me) for giving people like me (a little sick in the head?) an increase in endorphins through gut-wrenching laughter.

Thank you Club Msties for being a group of gracious, mostly polite, somewhat irreverent, and always hilarious people.

I would not have survived the last two years without MST3k. I mean that with the most sincerity I can muster in an Internet forum post. I’ve had my life chipped away bit by bit for five years. I’ve found the bottom, only to discover another opening in which to sink a little deeper… And I’ve mostly done this alone. In real life, the life outside of Facebook and Internet memes and porn, I’ve got very few people left in my life. Somehow, in the past five years, I got left behind., and I didn’t realize it until it was too late. But (and that’s BIG butt), I’m on the upswing. I found the light at the end of the tunnel. Or insert hopeful metaphor type 2B here . However you want to look at it, I’m better. Without the laughter and joy this show and you people brought me, I believe it would have ended much differently. I would not be writing this very incoherent and probably way too honest post. I hope it pleased you, nonetheless.

As far as my plans for the future? Uh… well, there’s a whole Season “Zero” that I need to watch… duh.

Love and Kisses,

Anthony

Stupidest monster-fighting ideas?

If you're as big a Gamera fan as I am, you can more or less agree that the Spinning Fountain Of Blood in Gamera Vs Gaos was one of the stupidest -- if not the stupidest -- monster-fighting idea ever carried out. Gamera Vs Gaos pretty much set the bar for that stuff.

Still, I'm watching Gamera Vs Barugon right now, and these clowns in charge of fighting Barugon are proposing some pretty rock-stupid shit... a giant diamond? A giant mirror array? Man, was that ever stupid. They'd have been shit outta' luck if not for Gamera's cameo towards the end of the movie.

Out of all the ideas for destroying the monster you've seen in every Japanese monster flick on MST3K, which one do you think is the stupidest?

While I thought the giant diamond scheme in Gamera Vs Barugon was dumb as a goddamn' bag of hammers, I've still gotta go with the Giant Spinning Fountain Of Blood.

You know, there's a lot of movies and genres we all know and love featured on MST3K. You've got your Cormans and your Lipperts, your Japanese dubs (brought to you by Sandy Frank). 50s horror movies, Russo-Finnish epics. But there's one genre I don't think gets enough love. So I'm just giving a shout out to
the sword and sorcery movies. Specifically, "Outlaw of Gor" (Mike, will you make me my own jack-booted dominatrix?), "Quest of the Delta Knights" (Ew, wizard wizz), and "Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell" (Mike, were there crackers in the Middle Ages?). All three criminally underrated.

I watched "The Brain That Wouldn't Die" today and the way the main character treats women, and the way they react to his treatment, made me want to bite some jugulars and rip off some arms. Seriously, the monster is the least disgusting character in that movie.
I also remember getting really mad during Kitten with a Whip because Ann-Margret's character is insufferable.

My second visit to Tom Servo was even a GREATER disappointment! Loud and overpriced, there was a thick oily film covering every surface, and I can only hope I escaped with no serious disease!
