For all of those that haven't experienced the late stages of a psychedelic night comedown, I offer Lycan Colony as a dang close likeness to the real thing. Just bizarre.

Does anyone know which “artist” has appeared the most on MST3K? Bert I Gordon, Roger Corman, and Bela Lugosi all have several eps each. Just wondered if anyone has done the math on this....

Hey friends! What episodes do you consider underrated? Is there any particular one you always show first to friends?

Bix as the only two dimensional character in the movie actually has decipherable motives. It took me a while to see it. What took me the longest was the pool hall trip.

I mean, I get that he has conflicting feelings about his father. He's angry and betrayed, but also guilty. And that carries over, along with his life as a drifter, to making him feel unworthy of love. Distrustful of it, too. But, deep down, he's a good man, and he knows it. So that's his whole relationship with Carrie. He wants her and the life she represents, but he doesn't think he deserves it, thinks he'll drag her down, can't reckon with the possibility of a good life and a loving relationship, and is afraid her father will bring out the worst.

Likewise, he sees Danny (who is apparently a teenager, given that his parents were married for 19 years) as a kid in need of a mentor/protector, something Bix never had.

Then Carrie's death makes him realize he was ready and it could have been good... just in time for it to break him. And suddenly Danny has to be the one to take care of him. But Bix is finally ready to let someone take care of him, and off they go.

So, like I said, that just leaves the pool hall. Why in the hell would he bring Danny there specifically to set them up to get mugged? (Gotta love how the owner is perfectly okay with that.) Why does he want them beaten, potentially killed, and all their money taken away?

I thought maybe it was too get Danny to trust him with the wallet, but that didn't pan out at all. Finally, it clicked.

At the beginning of the movie, we meet Danny when he's being chased by a pair of muggers. Bix has watched him run, but it's not until later that he gets to know Danny. To learn that the wallet is his, that he's easily cowed, and that he's on the run because he's afraid to deal with his parents' pending divorce. So Bix gets it in his head that Danny needs to learn to face his fears and stand up for himself. (This is, of course, a generation before Michael Jackson's Beat It made the point that it's stupid to get into unnecessary fights, running away is a perfectly reasonable option, it's not shameful or unmanly to do so, and toxic masculinity and peer pressure are terrible reasons to risk getting beaten or killed or thrown in jail. Yes, that was the message of the song. It was sadly lost on many.) He'd seen the pool hall when they arrived and clocked it as a place that would brew trouble. He set Danny up to get mugged again, but in a way that running away wasn't really an option. And stood by him, which also ensured that Danny couldn't just cut and run even if the opportunity presented itself. Danny says as much in the aftermath - that he would have run if not for Bix. But he faced his fear, and Bix drives the lesson home that sometimes you have to stand up to these things.

This the turning point for Danny that allows him to go back to save Bix from the mob, take on Jesse, and ultimately return home. The back alley fight is a rite of passage.

A curious thing...

The other nite, having some free time, I came to the 'clubhouse', if you will, to watch an experiment. The episode list page showed there were 302 watching currently. I made my choice, but changed my mind and went back to the front page. It showed there were 596 watching. Hmm. So I reloaded the page and it then said 308 were watching. Ok, so I reloaded and it said 604 were watching. I reloaded and it said 298 were watching. This went on several times as quickly as I could reload with the same results of 'high and low'. When the total was over 600, I looked to see which episodes were being watched and was surprised to see the vast majority were watching season 0 and season 1 with 20 viewing episode k03, which doesn't have an active link. Dare call it conspiracy?
