Well, after about six months of avoiding Facebook and most news, I'm much healthier, and easing myself back into reality (ahead of schedule; I figured it'd be post-election).
I'm not even sure it will affect my contributions here, but pls pls pls friend me on FB... pls?

I found the article about Bridget Nelson inspiring. I have read comments on the old MST3K Usenet group of how the series positively affected some of the posters. I find that laughter is very uplifting and the show was brilliant at providing laughter. Anyone care to share their stories of how it has affected you?

Having now seen the new season, I give it an overall grade of B-, maybe a B. If you care what I think, here it is. :) (Actually, it's there if you don't care, too, but you can just ignore it.)

Pros:

The best part of the reboot is Jonah. He is so fun as the new host. He was a little rough in the first couple of episodes, but he quickly found his feet and, in my opinion, he did the best job of everyone. I'd never heard of him (or anyone else) before this and he was really good.

The new door sequence. Very cool. I think it's a lot of fun and I really enjoyed watching it every time, looking for different details.

Overall, I liked the movie choices. Some of the episodes didn't work for me, but I was really happy to see the wide assortment. I loved The Beast of Hollow Mountain, and some of the movies were moderately interesting on their own which I always have liked about MST3K.

The occasional "movie spills". I'm assuming that those moments indicated times when they had to cut the movies for time.

Gypsy occasionally popping into the theater. It's not huge, but she's there with a quip and then she's out. It works for me.

The idea that Jonah has to act out the open every time. For some reason, I find that a really entertaining detail. I did wish that there had been one or two little tweaks with Jonah moving a little differently or saying his lines differently, just to point it out, but it was still fun.

Cons:

Number one, for me, and I know it's weird, but it's Crow's body. I mentioned in another post that I don't know why, but I find Crow's body extremely weird. It feels like they took the puppet torso and glued it onto a transformer body. Every time he stood up in the theater, I was weirded out by it and I hated it.

Second, another thing I mentioned in another post. The lack of dynamism in the theater. None of the silhouettes move much and the oft-mentioned voice similarities makes it very difficult to know who is talking. There's just not much connection to the riffing. I like Rifftrax even without people on the screen, but they don't claim to be anything else and Mike, Kevin and Bill have a lot of experience and history to support their voices. ...and they're already different.

Third, not a con so much as a weakness. Kinga and Max. They're okay at best, in my opinion. Too much self-referential commentary, e.g. the on-demand viewing in Netflix. It feels like they're trying too hard, and not in a funny way. They're always just standing together staring at the camera. (Again, this lack of movement.)

So, in general, it was better than I thought it would be, and I wouldn't mind a second season, but if they do it, I'd hope for more kinetic activity from all the characters, mostly the bots and Kinga and Max. Some voice differentiation and something that helps me connect with them in the theater. It has to be more than Tom flying around and Crow standing up (*shudder*). I need gestures and movement!
