Concerned for the characters?

I was watching Monster A Go Go the other day. This horrible movie that is so far below B movie that it might go beyond Z. And yet, I had a moment when the narrator was doing the whole "There was no monster." thing where I was suddenly happy to realize that this meant that Jimmy would get to go fishing with Frank Douglas after all.

Has anyone ever had something like this before where, even with as bad as the movies are, there's a genuine (if short-lived) concern for the well-being of the characters?

There was once a blind man who had so fine a sense of touch that,
when any animal was put into his hands, he could tell what it was merely by
the feel of it. One day the cub of a wolf was put into his hands, and he was asked
what it was. He felt it for some time, and then said, "Indeed, I am not sure whether it is a wolf's cub or a fox's:
but this I know -- it would never do to trust it in a sheepfold."

Thinnest plot?

Which MST3K movie do you think has the thinnest plot? There are a bunch where the action is slow, or where there are long pauses. Hours of rock climbing or liturgical dance. Or lots of confusion where you need to spend half an hour assembling the plot like a jigsaw puzzle to make sense of what you just watched. But which movie is the one where the plot just isn't there? Nothing happens, no one does anything, none of it matters. I usually think of The Starfighters (which I just rewatched this weekend), but is there a riffed movie with less of a plot than that?

Okay, this one has been bugging me for quite some time: Was "Night of the Lepus" ever riffed on this show? I swear I had seen it at one point, but now I cannot find it anywhere. Am I wrong? Or just mistaken perhaps?

Anyone seen this stinker: Alien Dead? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Dead

Featuring Buster Crabbe (Flash Gordon) in his last film role. I REALLY wish this would've gotten the MST3k treatment. My friend bought it years ago, and we were literally on the floor laughing at a few points.

Someone else here has to have seen it... thoughts?

A group of friends and I were watching an invention program here in Australia and it got us wondering.. "What MST3K invention could be a a viable real-world product?". After a long discussion mainly consisting of terrible reenactments of our favourite host segments we couldn't decide between the Rat Pack Chess Set or the Gutter Bumber Chute. We suspect they may exist in Japan....

Sometimes I want to "best riffs" lines from the movie itself. Like in "It Conquered The World"- Tom's on the radio with the alien guy and he says something like, "Yes, it's true, I am your only friend. Nobody else knows about you." And I am always left wishing I could hear the other side of that conversation. Is the alien upset that he only has one Earth-friend so far?

The stinger for "It Conquered the Earth" is great because it's a punchline to an extended setup. One of those jokes that works on repetition, past the point where it's funny, but circles back to hilarious.

I just can't push th #&*!$ button...seriously I could Finnish several seasons by watching one or two movies, but they sound sooooo bad. I feel like Im trying to work up the courage to punch myself in the junk. For example "Untamed youth" someone tell me this ain't as bad as it sounds, cause Im guessing some kids drink some beers and smoke cigs,And kiss in the back seat for an hour and a half, and season one was kinda slow anyway.
"Wild Rebels"/"Hellcats" for basically the same reason in season 2.
Now season 3 is kind of different, its"Master ninja 1&2" that are stopping me dead. Can anybody tell me if this was a series(a really crappy one)back in the 80s. I swear I remember the old guy ninja. In the 7th grade, pro wrestling had more believability than that show.
Hats off Matt,I thought it would take sir Edmund Hillary to climb that Mt. Everest of poo that is season six.
So...if Im missing a real gem here, let me know....and is there a title or two you just can't bring yourself to watch?
I think I'll give space mutiny a try,or maybe just poke myself in the eye.

Well, alll-llllrighty then, gang! It's time for yet another booze-fueled diversion for your New Year's Eve '12 enjoyment! As inspired by Frankie DeMario, it's the Experiment 519, "Outlaw Of Gor" Drinking Game! You're going to need at least three pitchers of Killer Shrews for this bad boy:

-Whenever somebody says "Cabot", take a drink.
-Whenever Nelson or the Bots makes a Jethro Tull reference, take a drink.
-Whenever Cabot's pudgy geek buddy hits on a chick in the opening scene, take a drink.
-Whenever a woman with big, fluffy '80s hair appears, take a drink.
-Whenever a guy gives the camera a buffalo shot, take a drink.

WARNING: The name "Cabot" is called out so many times -- and so frequently -- in the opening scenes that it's physically impossible for a single player to take a drink every time without winding up totally pants-pissing within the first fifteen minutes. It's strongly recommended that the Experiment 519 Drinking Game be played with a team of two or three, taking alternate turns, in order to make sure that every instance of "Cabot!" is covered without ending up so wrecked that you can't finish the movie. Same for all the buffalo shots; there are stretches where the buffalo shots come so fast and furiously that there's no way for a single player to keep up.

"Mmmmm-mmmmm, that's good booze!" --Joel, "The Killer Shrews"

I'm trying to find the name of a movie I saw back in the early '70s when I was a kid. It was probably something aired on a Saturday afternoon Creature Feature program. All I remember was that some monster was on the loose killing everyone in its path. It actually looked like a tall, strong man without skin...at least that's what it looked like to me as a kid. The only scene I remember is when the monster was wondering and walked through a butcher shop or meat packing plant where there were sides of beef hanging and the monster killed an employee there. Anyone have an idea what this movie is? Sorry, that's all I can recall about it.

Was there a movie similar to "The Pod People"?

I seem to remember another film with a bipedal-pygmy-elephant-alien that befriends an annoying child.... They looked somewhat similar to Trumpy, but with wider heads and were either red or purple.

Am I crazy? Am I just remembering "Pod People" wrong? (I watched it recently and still seem to recall these other elephant creatures.) Or does such a film exist?

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

Well, now that we've got a sort of Season 6 vs. Season 4 debate sorta kinda bubbling -- sort of -- may I hang my ass over the edge and suggest: Season 8? My evidence:

802, "The Leech Woman" ("JEEEEEEEDDDDD!")
804, "The Deadly Mantis" ("I've got a mantis in my pantis!")
805, "The Thing That Couldn't Die" ("Evil window, evil sofa, evil rhododendron!")
809, "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" ("...and THAT was for that bedwetting movie!")
814, "Riding With Death" (all the '70s jokes you can handle)
819, "Invasion Of The Neptune Men" ("...more like Upper Atmosphere Chief!")
820, "Space Mutiny" (loves me some space zamboni chases)

...and last but certainly not least -- the crown jewel of Season 8:
812, "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Etc." (where to begin? Big hair riffs? Wretched dance number riffs? Shick Outta Shape? "Red Zone Cuba" callback? "You feelthy peeg"? "Madison"?)

Experiment 620, "Danger Death Ray": another movie I suspect of having been directed by Coleman Francis under a pseudonym, despite its lack of airplanes and coffee. How else could a premise as exciting as a suave, top-drawer secret agent searching for a kidnapped scientist and recovering his deadly secret invention be so totally drained of excitement?

Just now watched no. 608, "Code Name: Diamond Head", and while the movie/riffing totally kicks butt, I'm not so sure about Mary Jo Pehl as Magic Voice. Mind you, I totally love Mary Jo -- she wrote some awesome material and did some excellent character work, especially as Pearl Forrester -- but it was kind of jarring to hear her as Magic Voice. She doesn't sound quite aloof and dispassionate enough. It's as if she can't help sounding bitter and sarcastic even when saying something as innocuous as "fifteen seconds until commercial sign".

OK, granted, I've seen precious little MST3k wallpaper art, but this is wicked-assed cool. I stumbled over it while rummaging around on Google Images looking for a large, clean copy of the MST3K "moon" logo to autotrace into an Illustrator file.

OK, so now I'm diving into Season 0 again on the recommendation of Matt Eickhoff, specifically Experiment 013, "SST Death Flight". I'm liking it already -- the opening shot is an obviously fake shot of a model Concorde, despite the buttloads of stock footage of real, actual Concordes and prototype SST liners in flight.

I'm also floored by its massive, all-star cast of every possible has-been or almost-was in films and TV, including the occasional star here and there, such as -- duh duh DUHHNNNN -- Peter Graves! From "B" movies to stardom in "Mission: Impossible" to... well, TV movies. Oh, and I see Robert Reed as the captain of the SST liner; definitely a step up for Papa Brady, and -- AUUUGGGGHHHH, BILLY CRYSTAL! We're DOOOOOOOMED.

But, aaaanyway...I also like how this movie continues the tradition of cheap and entirely unrealistic airliner cockpits. Cripes, it wouldn't have been that much trouble to snag some fotos of an SST cockpit and give 'em to the studio carpenters -- unless, as I suspect, they pissed away their budget on the all-star cast of has-beens, almost-wases and B-listers. Oh, and you gotta love that shot of the nose of the SST as it's sitting on the runway. God, it's so obviously FAKE. It's just SAD, man.

The riffing is surprisingly snappy here so far; it's about halfway through the season here, and they sound like they're pretty settled in, unlike Experiment 004, "Gamera Vs. Barugon", where it sounds as if they're just delivering a passive, sporadic running commentary. The riffing on "SST Death Flight" sounds more like Comedy Central Season 1 -- which is to say, better than a lot of folks give it credit for, including the MST crew themselves.

The more of this I watch, the more surprised I am that it's not among the Season 0 movies that were redone at Comedy Central later on. It's so packed with old stars that they can hardly move, and so packed with perilous plot points that they can hardly close the overhead bins.

Wow, it's starting to look like I've found a Season 0 episode that I might keep "in rotation": "SST Death Flight". As Servo himself commented, this is like a parody of '70s airplane/airport movies (though unintentional). Interesting how this turdbomb is already late to the airplane-movie party, having been made in 1977.

State of the Club Address:
This site is now 4 months old. As you can see, I'm still making changes to it (hopefully improvements). We're now getting about 1000 hits per day! That's partly because we have basically all the episodes in one convenient place. But I think it's more because we have an awesome growing community of friendly thoughtful fans. Without you, it'd be just a collection of videos.

So thanks for making Club MST3k great!
