I grew up in the 90s and played with Creepy Crawlers when they were revived. Now I feel like I owe Joel and the bots ...Of course, mine was much safer ...But I do remember a home smelter that made tiny figurines. That sounded like a fun accident waiting to happen.

Well, alll-llllrighty then, gang! It's time for yet another booze-fueled diversion for your New Year's Eve '12 enjoyment! As inspired by Frankie DeMario, it's the Experiment 519, "Outlaw Of Gor" Drinking Game! You're going to need at least three pitchers of Killer Shrews for this bad boy:

-Whenever somebody says "Cabot", take a drink.
-Whenever Nelson or the Bots makes a Jethro Tull reference, take a drink.
-Whenever Cabot's pudgy geek buddy hits on a chick in the opening scene, take a drink.
-Whenever a woman with big, fluffy '80s hair appears, take a drink.
-Whenever a guy gives the camera a buffalo shot, take a drink.

WARNING: The name "Cabot" is called out so many times -- and so frequently -- in the opening scenes that it's physically impossible for a single player to take a drink every time without winding up totally pants-pissing within the first fifteen minutes. It's strongly recommended that the Experiment 519 Drinking Game be played with a team of two or three, taking alternate turns, in order to make sure that every instance of "Cabot!" is covered without ending up so wrecked that you can't finish the movie. Same for all the buffalo shots; there are stretches where the buffalo shots come so fast and furiously that there's no way for a single player to keep up.

"Mmmmm-mmmmm, that's good booze!" --Joel, "The Killer Shrews"

Well, now that we've got a sort of Season 6 vs. Season 4 debate sorta kinda bubbling -- sort of -- may I hang my ass over the edge and suggest: Season 8? My evidence:

802, "The Leech Woman" ("JEEEEEEEDDDDD!")
804, "The Deadly Mantis" ("I've got a mantis in my pantis!")
805, "The Thing That Couldn't Die" ("Evil window, evil sofa, evil rhododendron!")
809, "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" ("...and THAT was for that bedwetting movie!")
814, "Riding With Death" (all the '70s jokes you can handle)
819, "Invasion Of The Neptune Men" ("...more like Upper Atmosphere Chief!")
820, "Space Mutiny" (loves me some space zamboni chases)

...and last but certainly not least -- the crown jewel of Season 8:
812, "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Etc." (where to begin? Big hair riffs? Wretched dance number riffs? Shick Outta Shape? "Red Zone Cuba" callback? "You feelthy peeg"? "Madison"?)

Experiment 620, "Danger Death Ray": another movie I suspect of having been directed by Coleman Francis under a pseudonym, despite its lack of airplanes and coffee. How else could a premise as exciting as a suave, top-drawer secret agent searching for a kidnapped scientist and recovering his deadly secret invention be so totally drained of excitement?

Just now watched no. 608, "Code Name: Diamond Head", and while the movie/riffing totally kicks butt, I'm not so sure about Mary Jo Pehl as Magic Voice. Mind you, I totally love Mary Jo -- she wrote some awesome material and did some excellent character work, especially as Pearl Forrester -- but it was kind of jarring to hear her as Magic Voice. She doesn't sound quite aloof and dispassionate enough. It's as if she can't help sounding bitter and sarcastic even when saying something as innocuous as "fifteen seconds until commercial sign".

OK, granted, I've seen precious little MST3k wallpaper art, but this is wicked-assed cool. I stumbled over it while rummaging around on Google Images looking for a large, clean copy of the MST3K "moon" logo to autotrace into an Illustrator file.

OK, so now I'm diving into Season 0 again on the recommendation of Matt Eickhoff, specifically Experiment 013, "SST Death Flight". I'm liking it already -- the opening shot is an obviously fake shot of a model Concorde, despite the buttloads of stock footage of real, actual Concordes and prototype SST liners in flight.

I'm also floored by its massive, all-star cast of every possible has-been or almost-was in films and TV, including the occasional star here and there, such as -- duh duh DUHHNNNN -- Peter Graves! From "B" movies to stardom in "Mission: Impossible" to... well, TV movies. Oh, and I see Robert Reed as the captain of the SST liner; definitely a step up for Papa Brady, and -- AUUUGGGGHHHH, BILLY CRYSTAL! We're DOOOOOOOMED.

But, aaaanyway...I also like how this movie continues the tradition of cheap and entirely unrealistic airliner cockpits. Cripes, it wouldn't have been that much trouble to snag some fotos of an SST cockpit and give 'em to the studio carpenters -- unless, as I suspect, they pissed away their budget on the all-star cast of has-beens, almost-wases and B-listers. Oh, and you gotta love that shot of the nose of the SST as it's sitting on the runway. God, it's so obviously FAKE. It's just SAD, man.

The riffing is surprisingly snappy here so far; it's about halfway through the season here, and they sound like they're pretty settled in, unlike Experiment 004, "Gamera Vs. Barugon", where it sounds as if they're just delivering a passive, sporadic running commentary. The riffing on "SST Death Flight" sounds more like Comedy Central Season 1 -- which is to say, better than a lot of folks give it credit for, including the MST crew themselves.

The more of this I watch, the more surprised I am that it's not among the Season 0 movies that were redone at Comedy Central later on. It's so packed with old stars that they can hardly move, and so packed with perilous plot points that they can hardly close the overhead bins.

Wow, it's starting to look like I've found a Season 0 episode that I might keep "in rotation": "SST Death Flight". As Servo himself commented, this is like a parody of '70s airplane/airport movies (though unintentional). Interesting how this turdbomb is already late to the airplane-movie party, having been made in 1977.

Here's a treat for all you mashup artists out there, or just any other MSTies who enjoy obscure and slightly "retarded" music: the original un-riffed "Night Train To Mundo Fine", the stirring and evocative theme from Coleman Francis' "Red Zone Cuba":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYl_YzcJMKU

Honestly, this is actually starting to grow on me. I don't know why. The lyrics are your classic hard-boiled, hard-livin' hard luck story, and Carradine's voice has a perversely charming poor-man's-Johnny-Cash sound to it. Mind you, that doesn't mean I don't still think that this was one of the most ill-conceived decisions in the history of American films.

All together, now, gang...!

Over in the "Beast Of Yucca Flats" discussion thread, RosieB mentioned not being able to summarize the plot of a Coleman Francis movie to save her life. Sadly, the episodes featuring Coleman Francis pictures are among my favorites, so I've watched them a metric buttload of times, and so am able to summarize them quite easily.

So, now, as a public service to all my fellow MSTies here in the main forum, I give you now -- just in case someone you know is watching a Coleman Francis movie and asks "what in the Hell, Michigan am I WATCHING?" -- these convenient Quick Summaries of the Filmography of Coleman Francis!

SKYDIVERS: Guys jump from planes. Guy no.1 has affair with sleazy chick. Other guy fired for being drunk also has affair with the sleazy chick. "I like coffee". Guy's wife has affair with mechanic. Guys jump from planes some more. Sleazy chick tries to help fired guy get revenge by putting acid in Guy no.1's parachute. Everybody twists. Awesome big blonde. Awesome chick's ass in spotted bikini. Guy no.1 dies in parachute failure. Fired guy and sleazy chick are shot at from an airplane. They die. The end.

RED ZONE CUBA: John Carradine sings. Coleman Francis escapes prison. Cop tries to arrest two guys for changing a tire. Coleman Francis hitches ride with two guys. They all volunteer for Bay Of Pigs invasion. Turns out they ARE the invasion. They end up in prison again. Petey Plane helps them escape from Cuba. They go pitchblende mining. Coleman Francis is shot from a helicopter. He dies. The end.

BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS. An eminent scientist. Iron Curtain. Shadowy pursuers. Secrets from the Kremlin. Photos of the Moon never before seen. A nuclear test. Flag on the Moon. Push a button. Shit happens. From eminent scientist to fearsome beast. Wheels of Progress. World's biggest "area". People shot at from airplanes. Tor Johnson dies. The end.

No, please. No need to thank me.

Just wondering... "Zontar, The Thing From Venus": has anyone else here seen this clunker in their wasted adolescent late nights watching their local late-late show horror hosts? "Zontar" is a 1966 American International made-for-TV remake of Roger Corman's original 1956 turdball "It Conquered The World", starring the durable and brain-numbing John Agar in the role originally played by Peter Graves (ironically, by this time, Graves had risen to stardom on "Mission: Impossible"). While the scenes are played almost line-for-line, "Zontar" manages to go the extra mile to Stinkburger City owing to the neurotic scenery-chewing of the misguided scientist's wife, and Agar's excruciatingly soulless delivery of the notorious closing speech.

I originally saw this dung heap on the local Saturday night "Chiller Theater" when I was about sixteen, and rediscovered it a couple of years ago when rummaging around the archive.org Public Domain archive in search of copies of all those great old "B" sci-fi/horror flicks I used to watch on the old Count Gore DeVol show.

As I became reacquainted with MST3k, and saw its take on "It Conquered The World", I suddenly realized what a great companion piece it'd make as the second half of a double feature with "Zontar, The Thing From Venus".

If you haven't seen it yet, why not twist up a fattie, mix up a pitcher of Killer Shrews, and stream this turkey on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yejXYdA6bVs or better yet, download the mpeg4 from archive.org at http://archive.org/details/Zontar_Thing_From_Venus .
