Um excuse we Finns so DO have a word for "subtle"!
Well actually now that I think about it, we don't, we really don't have a word that directly corresponds with "subtle". Huh.

A lot of people wonder what the WORST film they ever did on MST3K was. IMO, there are five films which are so bad, they've fallen completely off the scale of composition, thoughtfulness, or simple good taste. These films are so bad, they each represent a singular atrocity, and to prioritize any one over the other is to neglect them all. They are, in no particular order:

The Beast of Yucca Flats
Manos: The Hands of Fate
Rocket Attack U.S.A.
The Castle of Fu Manchu

These films are so bad, so incomprehensibly, unfathomably vile, that each one must be seen to be believed. I think you would be right to say that any of these five movies are equally the worst films ever featured on MST3K

This movie was directed by a guy who made a film called The Corpse Grinders, which is about a company that took corpses and turned them into cat food, making cats crave the flesh of their owners.

For The First Time, Again: "Overdrawn At The Memory Bank"

Well-llp, time to grab another mpeg4 off the pile I nabbed off YouTube during the Great Club MST3K YouTube Blackout -- a bunch of episodes I hadn't seen since they went out of reruns, 15-20some years ago.

Now, with the aid of The Weed Of Deceit (nudge nudge wink wink), I'm taking a whack at Overdrawn At The Memory Bank, which I understand is a really popular episode.

(ahem) Jeezus, this is rank. It really is astonishing that this was produced by a PBS affiliate, WNET. It looks as if they'd just gotten a whole bunch of really cool effex gear and couldn't wait to try it out -- couldn't even wait for an actual decent story. Problem is, it kinda' winds up like Hobgoblins -- so dated that it's like it's got its feet nailed to the floor in the mid '80s. The production values are equal to Dr. Who episodes of the same vintage, only without the majesty and grandeur.

I still can't make up my mind if the sci-fi part is worse, or the sudden soap-opera part, or the really third-rate attempts to evoke the atmosphere of Bogart's Casablanca. I'm a huge Bogart fan, so I'm really particular about parodies of Casablanca -- the good ones are awesome, but the ones that aren't good are really, really weak, man. Raul Julia's impression of Bogart stinks out loud (forgive me), and I want to knee the guy doing the Peter Lorré schtick in the groin, and snag on him, and give him a power sit-up.

I suspect there were a lot of big-check-writing liberals in NY who were really, really pissed off the morning after this dung heap aired.

But, aaaaanyway.

I think this episode's going to have to grow on me; it's not going to be an instant favorite, like Giant Spider Invasion or Dr. Z, but there's some cool stuff in here, and I might be able to dig it once I can stop wincing at the movie. There's some great riffing off the cheesiness of this whole movie, especially the stupid-assed fake futuristic technobabble and the way they beat the whizzy video effex and thin synthesizer score to within an inch of their lives. I don't know about the host segments, yet, but I love, love, love Pearl and Observer's "When Loving Lovers Love". I love it.

Looked up "Sampo" and found this: "In Finnish mythology, the Sampo was a magical artifact constructed by Ilmarinen that brought good fortune to its holder; nobody knows exactly what it was supposed to be." Apparently it's been variously interpreted as a chest, a tree, a mill, a compass, and other surprisingly unrelated objects.

Also, the "dent between the nose and the lip" is called a philtrum. Isn't it weird that there's a word for this, but very few people have actually heard it?
