The most underrated episode ever. How this has not even broken 200 yet, while Space Mutiny is over 800, is a mystery to me.

"Every frame of this movie looks like someone's last known photograph" is still, for my money, the single greatest MST3K riff of all time. Seriously, it's like the universal riff for every low budget B-flick ever made.

I love Mike but he never came out with one as perfect as that (although sometimes he came close).

Good movie vs. bad movie

Or at least a movie that effectively sets a mood vs. one that thinks it's setting a mood and fails spectacularly.

I'm trained to be an academic which means that I often overthink things, and when I don't overthink them, I just like thinking about them. And I started thinking about what makes a good movie vs. what makes a bad movie.

I have never watched Jaws from beginning to end. I've seen many pieces of it and the end of it more times than I can count (from channel surfing). Tonight, it came on after a show I was watching and I watched the very beginning for the first time ever. Whether you like the movie or not, it is very effective at setting the ominous mood. You know it's going to be some kind of horror movie even though all you see initially is an underwater shot. Then, with the death of the girl which is quick but gives you plenty of time to be horrified at her death, you know this movie is scary. Even though I knew exactly what was going to happen, what the cause of her death was and how the movie would progress from there, my heart sped up and I was genuinely anxious while watching it. (Now, I'm a major wimp when it comes to scary movies, so this is my reaction.)

Compare this to the first ten minutes of The Last Shark (a movie so obviously a rip-off of Jaws that its release in the U.S. blocked by a lawsuit). You have a young man killed by a shark while surfing, but the setting of mood fails completely. The opening song is upbeat, the windsurfer is given too much time showing off his technique and the death happens in seconds with no time to identify with the victim. Shot-for-shot it is nearly identical to Jaws, but it utterly fails.

It's not very often that you can make this kind of direct comparison between movies to see what works and what doesn't. Part of it is budget, certainly. I couldn't find the budget for The Last Shark, but I'm positive that it wasn't the $9 million that Jaws had. However, budget can't explain it completely. Part of it is likely the complete lack of suspense. You know from the get go that it's a shark. Then, there's the whole launching people into the air thing. With Jaws, you know that it's a shark, but do you really believe it at first. You get pulled into the doubts of the locals, the assumption of paranoia and then, you have the obvious instability of Quint and his story of being stuck in the water with sharks. with The Last Shark, you have none of that. The superficial details are the same as Jaws, but you get nothing to connect you to any of the characters and you're not drawn into their world. You are just looking at this event happening. And as you start to pay attention to details, you get pulled even further out of the story. (Cheerleaders at a windsurfing regatta? Candidate for governor organizing the regatta as a way of getting elected? etc.)

All in all, it's intriguing to be able to compare like this...but I'm too much of a wimp to watch all of Jaws, so I'll stop there. :)

It's that time again....

If a Hollywood producer hired you to remake any of the "experiments" from MST3K which would it be and what's your vision for it? What director/s style would emulate? Who would you cast in the film? (it can be anyone dead or alive, you have the technology and the funds at your disposal). Would you salvage a stinker? Stay true to source? Turn something into a musical or just fix an ending that drives you insane? It's you're call, Director.
